News 1 - Somdev Devvarman announced retirement from professional Tennis
Somdev Devvarman announced his retirement from professional tennis. Somdev touched a career-high rank of number 62 in 2011.
Devvarman is the only Indian to have reached the final of the Chennai Open singles event in 2009. He won the singles gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He also won singles gold at the Asian Games in 2010 as well as the doubles gold along with Sanam Singh. He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2011.
News 2 - Narinder Batra resigned as IOA associate VP
Dr. Narinder Batra resigned as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Associate Vice President as an expression of his protest appointments of Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala as life presidents of the national Olympic body.
The IOA during its annual general meeting named Kalmadi and Chautala as life time presidents. Kalmadi, tainted by the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games corruption scandal, had declined the life presidency offer.
News 3 - UK envoy to EU Sir Ivan Rogers resigned
The UK's top Diplomat in the European Union, Sir Ivan Rogers, has resigned. He was appointed to the role of permanent representative by David Cameron in 2013. He was expected to be in office till October 2017. He was also expected to play a major role in the Brexit negotiations with the EU.
Sir Ivan has also served as private secretary to ex-chancellor Ken Clarke, principal private secretary to ex-PM Tony Blair and Mr. Cameron's Europe adviser.
News 4 - Table Tennis Olympic Champion Li Xiaoxia announced retirement
China's Table Tennis Olympic Champion Li Xiaoxia has announced her retirement through social media. Li helped China win the team gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games. She also finished the runner-up in the singles event.
Li is the eighth table tennis Grand Slam winner in history with singles crowns from the 2008 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, 2012 Olympics in London and 2013 world championships in Paris. She also has several doubles and teams world titles to her name.
News 5 - Mahindra Singh Dhoni stepped down as the Captain of T-20 & ODI format of cricket
Mahindra Singh Dhoni announced his decision to step down as captain of Team India's limited over cricket matches. He will, however, be available for selection for the ODI and T20 England series starting 15th of January.
Dhoni had earlier stepped down as Captain of India's Test team. Under Dhoni, India had won a T-20 and ODI World Cup and a Champions Trophy title. The 35-year-old from Ranchi played 283 ODIs and 199 of them as captain.
News 6 - Ashirbad Behera, Ranjib Biswal quit posts from Odisha Cricket Association
On the direction of the Apex court, Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) secretary Ashirbad Behera, President Ranjib Biswal and all OCA office-bearers quit their posts.
The Supreme Court on January 2 had asked to dissolve OCA. Meanwhile, President of Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association - MPCA Sanjay Jagdale and Chairman Jyotiraditya Scindia demitted their posts in the light of Lodha committee recommendations. Two other office - bearers vice president M. K. Bhargava and Ashok Jagdale also dimitted their posts, as they crossed 70 years of age criteria recommended by the Lodha committee.
News 7 - Dilip Vengsarkar Resigned as the MCA Vice-President Post
Former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar stepped down as the Vice-President of the Mumbai Cricket Association in view of the Honourable Supreme Court order dated 2nd January 2017. Earlier Sharad Pawar had resigned as the President of the MCA.
Vengsarkar served four two-year terms as the MCA vice president from 2002 to 2010. Vengsarkar was also the chief national selector from 2006-08. Currently, he's the chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
News 8 - The 13-time Gymnastics World Champion, Yana Kudryavtseva, announced retirement
Russian Rhythmic Gymnast Yana Kudryavtseva announced her retirement from competition. She is currently 19 years old. Kudryavtseva won 13 world championships from 2013 to 2015. She won Silver in Rio Olympics 2016.
She is also the 2015 European Games All-around champion, two-time (2014, 2016) European Championships All-around champion, the 2012 European Junior ball champion. Kudryavtseva was one of the finalist for the 2015 SportAccord Awards in category of the Sportswoman of the Year 2014.
