In SAP system, is it possible to interface its database to external parties? Describe in detail with suitable example if possible.

While passing one character in parameters, values are stored in SAP system and readable when we query a table in SAP. When more than one char is passed as parameter, values are stored in SAP however they are not readable. I also tried checking structure of table in SAP system, and also checked function and parameter. Any help would be appreciated?
