Respiration - Introduction
Description:
Respiration is a catabolic process which involves exchange of environmental oxygen and body’s carbon dioxide in order to produce energy. Oxygen is utilized by the organisms to break down nutrient molecules like glucose. Respiration is a physiochemical process.
Need for respiration
The energy needed to carry out the various life processes is provided by the process of respiration.
The nutrients like carbohydrates, protein, lipids etc. contain energy in their chemical bonds which is released by the process of respiration.
Carbon dioxide is a poisonous gas and need to be expelled out which is achieved by the process of respiration.
Respiration ensures continuous supply of energy.
