Perception of an object is known as image.

Locating an image

Human brain is capable of identifying the intensity of light received by the eye and it is also capable of identifying the direction from which light is entering the eye.

As the light strikes the retina within the eye, brain concludes that the source of the light is on the same line as that of the light.

To trace the exact location of the source, eye must receive at least two rays. When two rays with the same signature (characteristic) enter the eye, human brain can calculate the point of intersection and the angle between the rays and trace the location of the source.

Two Rays

Calculation is done using the angle between the two rays, arc of the eye.

r = Arc/θ

Where,

r = distance of object from the eye.

But, for distant object single eye cannot determine the difference between the two rays coming from the source as the angle between the rays is very small. So, the system of two eyes is used.
