Reflection Of Light
Description:
The branch of physics which deals with the nature of light, its sources, properties, effects and vision is called optics.
Light is that form of energy which makes objects visible to our eyes. We see the objects and interpret the world around us mainly because of light. Light is electromagnetic radiation.
Ray Optics
The phenomena of rectilinear propagation of light is called ray optics.
Ray of light is a representation of direction of propagation of light.
When light meets, a interface separating two transparent media, it is reflected, absorbed and
Reflection of Light
When light falls on the surface of a material it is either re-emitted without change in frequency or is absorbed in the material and turned into heat.
When the re-emitted light is returned into the same medium from which it comes, it is called reflected light and the process is known as reflection.
Reflection has two types −
Regular reflection
When ray of light from a source falls on an optically plane surface and reflects back with no change in the pattern/signature of the ray it is known as regular reflection.
Source image is formed in regular reflection.
Irregular reflection/Diffusion
When ray of light from a source falls on non-optically plane surface and reflects back with a change in the pattern/signature of the ray it is known as irregular reflection/diffusion.
Source image is not formed in irregular reflection.
Laws of reflection
- Incident ray, normal and reflected ray are in the same plane.
- Angle of incident = Angle of reflection.
