Multiple Images

Description:

When two mirror are placed together making an angle θ between them, then multiple images are formed as shown.

Multiple Images

Number of images formed can be calculated by using the following formula −

n =
360/θ
- 1

This formula is used when 360/θ is even i.e. two images overlap each other.

n =
360/θ

This formula is used when 360/θ is odd.

Where,

𝑛 = Number of images formed.

θ = Angle between the mirrors.

Example

  • If angle between the mirrors is 120o

    n =
    360/θ

    ∴ n =
    360/120
    = 3

Three images will be formed when angle between the mirrors is 120o

  • If angle between the mirrors is 90o

    n =
    360/θ
    - 1

    ∴ n =
    360/90
    - 1 = 3

Maximum three images will be formed when angle between the mirrors is 120o

Note − Number of images will be odd always.
