Description:

  • All the ray diagrams are drawn with incident light travelling from left to right.
  • All the distances are measured from pole of the mirror.
  • Pole is taken as origin and principle axis is taken as x-axis.
  • Distance measured to the left of pole of mirror are regarded as negative and those to the right are regarded as positive.
  • Distances measured above the principle axis are taken positive and those below are taken negative.

Conclusions from sign convention

  • Object distance is negative.
  • Radius of curvature is negative.
  • Focal length is negative.
  • Image distance can be positive or negative.
