Eukaryotes - Cell Membrane Transport

Description:
The fluid nature of the cell membrane helps in some of the important functions of the cell like cell growth, secretion, cell division etc. Membrane performs a very important function of transporting molecules across the cell membrane.
Transport across membrane may occur by −
Passive Transport
When molecules move without the requirement of energy, that type of transport is called
passive transport
.In case of passive transport, the molecules may move across the membrane by the process of simple diffusion in which molecules move from higher concentration to lower concentration.
Osmosis
- Osmosis occurs by the process of diffusion.
- Diffusion is the process of movement of solvent molecules across a semi permeable membrane.
Active Transport
- Some molecules are transported from lower to higher concentration against their concentration gradient.
- This type of movement requires the use of energy which is derived from ATP.
- The molecules may also pass through some carrier proteins with the expense of energy.
