Cytoskeleton is an elaborate network of filamentous protein structure present in the cytoplasm.

Cytoskeleton is involved in providing mechanical support, motility, maintenance of the shape of the cell. They occur only in eukaryotic cells.

Cytoskeleton can be of three types −

  • Microfilaments − Made up of actin proteins.

  • Intermediate filaments − Formed of a variety of proteins.

  • Microtubules − Formed of tubulin proteins.
