Ribosomes are smallest known ribonucleo-protein attached in the RER or floating freely in the cytoplasm and are the sites of protein synthesis. They were first observed by George Palade in 1953.
Ribosomes are made up of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and proteins. They are non-membrane bound structures.
Eukaryotic ribosomes are 80S and prokaryotic ribosomes are 70S. S is Svedberg’s unit which stands for the sedimentation coefficient. 70S and 80S ribosomes are composed of two subunits.
