Description:
The changes in a cell that occurs during the S phase of interphase are as follows −
- S phase is also known as the synthetic phase.
- The chromosomes replicate in this phase.
- The DNA content doubles i.e. from 1C to 2C for haploid cells and 2C to 4C for diploid cells.
- New chromatin fibres are formed.
- Invisible phase of M-stage since in this phase the chromosomes prepare themselves for equitable distribution later on.
- Synthesis of histone proteins.
- Synthesis of subunits of kinetochores.
