Description:

The changes in a cell that occurs during the S phase of interphase are as follows −

  • S phase is also known as the synthetic phase.
  • The chromosomes replicate in this phase.
  • The DNA content doubles i.e. from 1C to 2C for haploid cells and 2C to 4C for diploid cells.
  • New chromatin fibres are formed.
  • Invisible phase of M-stage since in this phase the chromosomes prepare themselves for equitable distribution later on.
  • Synthesis of histone proteins.
  • Synthesis of subunits of kinetochores.
