Description:

Continuity of life is an important characteristic of all living organism which is achieved by reproduction which may be sexual or asexual.

Rudolf Virchow was the first person to suggest that new cells are formed from the division of the pre-existing cells. Growth and development of every living organism depends on the growth and multiplication of its cells.

Unicellular organisms produce two or more daughter cells by the process of cell division whearas multicellular organisms develop from a single cell zygote by the process of cell division.

The process of cell reproduction involves two basic processes −

  • Cell growth − Period of synthesis and duplication of various components of cell.

  • Cell-Division − Adult cell divides into two daughter cells.
