Description:

Mitosis is also known as indirect or somatic or equational cell division. The characteristic features of mitotic cell division are as follows −

  • In mitosis chromosomes replicate and become equally distributed both quantitatively and qualitatively into two daughter nuclei.

  • Daughter cells possess same number and type of chromosomes as that of the parent cells hence mitosis is known as equational division.

  • It occurs in the somatic cells hence called as somatic cell division.

  • It also occurs in germ cells of the gonads (during the multiplicative phase of gametogenesis).

  • Occur in both haploid as well as diploid cells.

  • Mitosis takes about 30 minutes to 3 hours for completion.
