Mitosis - Introduction
Description:
Mitosis is also known as indirect or somatic or equational cell division. The characteristic features of mitotic cell division are as follows −
In mitosis chromosomes replicate and become equally distributed both quantitatively and qualitatively into two daughter nuclei.
Daughter cells possess same number and type of chromosomes as that of the parent cells hence mitosis is known as equational division.
It occurs in the somatic cells hence called as somatic cell division.
It also occurs in germ cells of the gonads (during the multiplicative phase of gametogenesis).
Occur in both haploid as well as diploid cells.
Mitosis takes about 30 minutes to 3 hours for completion.
