Mitosis - Control
Description:
The major factors that controls the process of mitosis are as follows −
The main factor controlling cell division is surface-volume ratio.
When a cell increases in size then its surface area increases in squares while its volume increases in cubes.
Decrease in surface volume ratio leads to decreased exchanging power of cell.
Cell division starts when the critical point in surface volume ratio is reached.
Cell division is also initiated due to change in nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio in the growing cell.
When DNA content is double during the S-phase then cell division is initiated.
Due to DNA doubling the nuclear mass and the cytoplasmic mass attains a state of equilibrium called the nucleoplasmic index.
