Description:
Aestivation is the mode of arrangement of sepals or petals in a flower bud with respect to one another.
Types of aestivation
Valvate − When sepals or petals just touch one another at the margin without overlapping. E.g. Calotropis.
Twisted − One margin overlaps that of the adjacent one and so on. E.g. China rose.
Imbricate − Margins overlap one another but not in any particular direction. E.g. Gulmohur.
Vexillary − Presence of 5 petals. The largest (standard) overlaps the two lateral petals (wings) which in turn overlaps to smallest anterior petals (keel).
