Description:

Androecium is an essential whorl which consists of the stamens or the male reproductive part of a flower.

Stamen consists of slender stalk like structure called a filament. It consists of an anther which has pollen grains.

Anther is usually bilobed structure and each lobe consists of two chambers called the pollen sacs. Pollen grains are produced in the pollen sacs.

When stamens are attached to the petals, they are called epipetalous stamens. E.g. Brinjal.

When stamens are attached to the perianth they are called epiphyllous stamens. E.g. Lily.

Stamens may remain free and are called polyandrous stamens.

If stamens are united into one bunch or one bundle, then these type of stamens are called monoadelphous stamens. E.g. China rose.

If stamens are united into two bundles they are called diadelphous stamens. E.g. Pea.

If stamens are united into more than two bundles they are called polyadephous stamens. E.g. Citrus.
