Flower - Types
Description:
Types of flowers on the basis of symmetry
Actinomorphic − Radial symmetry i.e. when a flower can be divided into two equal halves in any radial plane through the centre. E.g. Mustard.
Zygomorphic − Bilateral symmetry i.e. when a flower can be divided into two similar halves only in one plane. E.g. Pea.
Asymmetric − Irregular i.e. flower cannot be divided into two similar halves by any vertical plane passing through the centre. E.g. Canna.
Types of flowers on the basis of position of whorls
Hypogynous − Gynoecium occupies the highest position while the other parts lie below it. Ovary is superior. E.g. Mustard, china rose.
Perigynous − Gynoecium is present at the centre and other parts are located at the rim all almost at the same level. Ovary is half inferior. E.g. Plum, peach.
Epigynous − The margin of thalamus encloses the ovary and fuses with it. Other parts arise over the ovary. Ovary is inferior. E.g. Guava, cucumber.
