Fibrous root undergo modifications in order to perform additional function like storage and support. The modifications are −

Fleshy Adventitious Roots

  • Tuberous roots − Do not assume a definite shape. Occur singly. E.g. Sweet potato.

  • Fasciculated roots − Swollen roots occur in clusters. E.g. Dahlia.

Prop root

  • Large pillar like roots appearing from large horizontal branches. E.g. Banyan.
  • They grow downward and enter into the soil.
  • They provide support.

Stilt root

  • Roots appear from the basal node near the soil.
  • Grow downward and fix the stem with the soil to provide extra support.
