Roots can be of two general types, tap root system and fibrous root system. The characteristic feature of these root systems are as follows −

Tap Root System

  • Root which appear form the radical of the embryo of seed is called tap root.

  • The first formed root is called the primary root.

  • Primary roots bear several branches of first order which are known as secondary root.

  • The secondary root bear branches of second order known as tertiary root.

  • Finer branches are called rootlets.

  • Mostly a characteristics of dicotyledonous plants.

Fibrous Root System

  • Mostly occur in monocotyledonous plants.

  • Primary root is short lived and is replaced by a large number of roots.

  • Roots originate from the base of the stem.

  • Roots which are produced from any other part of the plant except the radical are called adventitious roots. Eg, grass, banyan tree etc.

  • The main function of these roots are water and mineral absorption, providing anchorage, storing of reserve food materials and synthesis of growth regulators.
