Description:
The arrangement of leaves on a stem or a branch is called phyllotaxy. It is defined as the mode of distribution of leaves.
Phyllotaxy is aims to position the leaves in such a way that they receive maximum sunlight for photosynthesis.
Types of phyllotaxy
Alternate or Spiral − A single leaf arises at each node in alternate manner. E.g. China rose.
Opposite − A pair of leaves arise at each node and lie opposite to each other. E.g. Guava plant.
Whorled − If more than two leaves arise at a node and form a whorl. E.g. Alstonia.
