Description:
Outermost whorl of a flower is the calyx. Members of calyx are called sepals. Mostly sepals are green in colour and leaf like.
Calyx can be gamosepalous in which all the sepals are united or fused with each other or polysepalous in which all the sepals remain free and are not united.
Functions
- Provides support to the thalamus and other floral parts.
- Protects internal floral organs (petals, stamens and carpels) in bud condition.
- Attracts insects for pollination when they are coloured.
- Performs photosynthesis.
