Description:
Fruit is a matured ovary with or without seeds. It is a mature or ripened ovary which develops after fertilization.
If a fruit is formed without fertilization of the ovary it is called parthenocarpic fruit.
Structure of a fruit
- Fruit consists of a wall or pericarp and seeds.
- Pericarp is thick and fleshy.
- Pericarp is differentiated into outer epicarp, middle mesocarp and the inner endocarp.
- In mango pericarp is well differentiated into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp.
- In coconut the mesocarp is fibrous.
