Description:

Fruit is a matured ovary with or without seeds. It is a mature or ripened ovary which develops after fertilization.

If a fruit is formed without fertilization of the ovary it is called parthenocarpic fruit.

Structure of a fruit

  • Fruit consists of a wall or pericarp and seeds.
  • Pericarp is thick and fleshy.
  • Pericarp is differentiated into outer epicarp, middle mesocarp and the inner endocarp.
  • In mango pericarp is well differentiated into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp.
  • In coconut the mesocarp is fibrous.
