Stem is the main axis of shoot system of plants. It is the ascending part of the shoot axis. They are positively phototropic and negatively geotropic.

Stem develops from plumule of embryo.

A stem with its leaves are called shoot system. A stem is differentiated into nodes and internodes which alternate each other.

Functions

• Stem helps in the conduction of water, minerals and food material all throughout the plant body.
• Stem produces and support of leaves and reproductive structures.
