Description:
Monocot seeds can be both endospermic and non-endospermic.
In some monocot seeds like maize, the seed coat is membranous and fused with the fruit wall. Endosperm is bulky and store food.
The outer covering of the endosperm separates the embryo by a proteinous layer called aleurone layer.
The embryo has one large and shield shaped cotyledon known as scutellum. The seed contains plumule and radical. Plumule and radical are enclosed in sheaths which are called coleoptile and coleorhiza respectively.
