Published on:  on 10th Apr, 2018

Description:

  • To apply magnetic force on a charge, the charge should be in motion as magnetic force affects only moving charge while stationary charge is unaffected.

  • Magnetic force cannot change the magnitude of velocity of charge.

  • Magnetic force changes the direction of charge traveling through a magnetic field and attempts to move the charge in a circular path in the field.

Difference between Magnetic and Electric Field

1.Force within the magnetic field is given by -

F =qV B

Force within the electric field is given by -

F =qE

2.Applicable on moving charge only.Applicable on stationary as well as moving charge.
3.It cannot change the magnitude of velocity (speed) because its component along

v = is Zero.

It increases / changes the magnitude of velocity (speed increase).
4.It can change the direction of moving charge.There is no change in direction.
