Description:

Galvanometer can also be used as a device to measure the potential difference between two points in a circuit known as Voltmeter.

To convert galvanometer into a voltmeter we need to place a high resistance in series with the galvanometer coil.

Voltmeter

Equation of voltmeter is given by -

ig = V/R + G

Where,

V = Potential difference

R = High resistance

G = Galvanometer

In Ammeter it is required to pass the maximum current through the shunt while in Voltmeter it is required to pass negligible amount of current through the high resistance in series.
