Description:
The genetic material of cyanobacteria is composed of naked circular DNA. This DNA is double stranded and highly coiled structure. This coiled DNA generally lies in the central part of the cytoplasm known as centroplasm. This coiled DNA is called nucleoid.
In addition to nucleoid some small extra chromosomal DNA also may be present which are known as plasmids or transposons.
Semicircular group of coiled membranes often attaches the plasma membrane with the nucleoid. It is known as lamellasome.
