Glycocalyx is the outermost mucilage layer of the cell envelope. It consists of non-cellulosic polysaccharides with or without proteins. Glycocalyx that occurs in the form of loose sheath is called slime layer and if the layer is thick and tough, the mucilage covering is called capsule. Glycocalyx gives a sticky characteristic to the cell.
Functions of glycocalyx −
- Glycocalyx is not essential for the survival of the bacteria but it has got several secondary functions.
- Prevents desiccation i.e. drying up pf the cells.
- Protects from phagocytes.
- Protects from toxic chemicals and drugs.
- Provides protection from virus.
- Helps in attachment.
- Immunogenicity.
