Protozoans were first studies by Leewenhoek in the year 1677. The name ‘Protozoa’ was coined by Goldfuss in the year 1817.
The branch of biology which deals with protozoa is called protozoology.
On the basis of locomotory organelles, the protozoans are divided into four groups −
- Zooflagellates
- Sarcodina
- Ciliata
- Sporozoa
