Kingdom Protista - Life Cycle in Protists
Description:
The sequence of events occurring between any given phase in one generation and that similar phase in the next generation constitute a life cycle.
Two types of life cycle are found in protista −
Life cycle showing zygotic meiosis
The zygote is 2n that divides by meiosis.
Produce vegetative cells with 1n chromosome number.
These cells divide repeatedly by mitosis and all the resulting daughter cells maintain the 1n number of chromosomes.
Some of the vegetative cells produce gametes and they combine during fertilization to produce a zygote and complete the life cycle.
Life cycle showing gametic meiosis
Organism spends most of its life time in 2n condition.
Gametes are n type and produced by meiosis.
Gametes fuse to form zygote and grows into a diploid organism.
