Published on:  on 5th Dec, 2017

Description:

The sequence of events occurring between any given phase in one generation and that similar phase in the next generation constitute a life cycle.

Two types of life cycle are found in protista −

Life cycle showing zygotic meiosis

  • The zygote is 2n that divides by meiosis.

  • Produce vegetative cells with 1n chromosome number.

  • These cells divide repeatedly by mitosis and all the resulting daughter cells maintain the 1n number of chromosomes.

  • Some of the vegetative cells produce gametes and they combine during fertilization to produce a zygote and complete the life cycle.

Life cycle showing gametic meiosis

  • Organism spends most of its life time in 2n condition.

  • Gametes are n type and produced by meiosis.

  • Gametes fuse to form zygote and grows into a diploid organism.
