Fungi includes a very large kingdom of over 100,000 species. They are cosmopolitan in occurrence. Fungi can be found in air, water, soil, over and inside plants and animals.

The branch of biology that deals with the study of fungi is known as mycology.

Fungi can be either parasitic or saprotrophic in nutrition. The parasitic fungi may cause disease in plants and animals.

The branch of biology dealing with fungal disease is called as fungal pathology.
