Two electric field lines never cross each other. Since, At any point, only one tangent in a particular  direction is possible. If the field lines cross each other then at the point of intersection the possible  tangent drawn will be in two different directions. So the principle made to convince the fact that the force on a one charge cannot act in two different directions at the same time is −
