Description:
If there are two similar charges then, electric field lines due to both will move parallel to each other, thereby repelling each other transversally. Due to this transversal force the distance at the centre of two lines becomes more.
For example. If there are two similar charges (say positive charges) then their electric field lines will be as shown in figure.
The two parallel electric field lines will exert transversal force of repulsion due to which the two similar charges will also experience force of repulsion.
