Published on:  on 10th Apr, 2018

Description:

Haloalkanes and Haloarenes can be classified based on the hybridization state of the carbon atom to which it is attached.

Compounds with sp3 C − X bond

  • Alkyl Halides − where the carbon bearing halogen has sp3 hybridization. It can be further into primary, secondary and tertiary depending on the number of carbon atom to which the α − carbon (carbon bearing the halogen atom) is attached.

Alkyl Halides

  • Allylic Halides − These are compounds in which the halogen atom is bonded to sp3 − hybridized carbon atom next to a C = C bond. This carbon is referred to as allylic carbon.

Allylic Halides

  • Benzylic Halides − These are compounds in which the halogen atom is bonded to sp3 − hybridized carbon atom next to an aromatic ring.

Benzylic Halides

Compounds with sp2 C − X bond

Vinylic Halides and Aryl halides − These are compounds in which the halogen atom is bonded to sp2 − hybridized carbon atom of a C = C bond.

Vinylic Halides
