Electronic Displacement Effects - Problem 6

Advertisements

Description:

Problem − Write the correct order of stability of carbocations given below −

Stability Carboncation

Solution − The correct order of stability of the given carbocations can be understood by hyperconjugation effect and is as follows −

Correct Stability

  • More the number of α −hydrogen atoms, greater dispersal of positive charge and thus, greater stability via hyperconjugation.

  • Vinyl carbocation is highly unstable due to the presence of positive charge on an sp2 hybridized carbon. Due to the electron-withdrawing ability of sp2 hybridization state, it destabilizes the carbocation, which is already electron-deficient.
