Lassaign’s Test consists of two steps −
Organic substance is fused with small quantity of sodium metal in a fusion tube. It is then boiled with distilled water, filtered and cooled. This extract is known as sodium fusion extract.
The elements are converted from covalent form into ionic form.
The ionic compounds formed during the fusion are extracted in aqueous solution and can be detected by simple chemical tests.
