Other elements like nitrogen, Sulphur, phosphorus, halogens are detected by ‘Lassaigne’s Test’.

Lassaign’s Test consists of two steps −

  • Organic substance is fused with small quantity of sodium metal in a fusion tube. It is then boiled with distilled water, filtered and cooled. This extract is known as sodium fusion extract.

  • The elements are converted from covalent form into ionic form.

  • The ionic compounds formed during the fusion are extracted in aqueous solution and can be detected by simple chemical tests.

  • The elements react with sodium in the sodium fusion extract according to the reactions below −
