Qualitative Analysis - Problem 9

Advertisements

Description:

Problem − The Rf value of A and B in a mixture determined by TLC in a solvent mixture 0.65 and 0.42. If the mixture was separated using column chromatography using the same solvent, then which one would elute first?

Solution − Given,

Rf(A) = 0.65

Rf(B) = 0.42

Since, A travelled farther away from the solvent base, it was less strongly adsorbed while lower Rf value of B shows that it is more strongly adsorbed by the adsorbent.

Thus, when extracted using column chromatography, A gets eluted first as it is less strongly adsorbed.
