Purification Techniques - Sublimation
Description:
Organic Compounds are purified based on the nature of the compound and the impurity present in it.
Melting point or boiling point gives an estimate of the compound’s purity.
The non-volatile impurities are left behind.
It involves heating an organic compound such that the solid changes to vapour state without going through the intermediate liquid phase.
Used to separate non-volatile from volatile substances. It is an endothermic reaction.
The impure substance is heated in a dish covered with perforated filter paper and an inverted funnel is placed over the filter paper.
A cotton is plugged at the stem of the funnel.
Vapours of the solid subliming, pass through the holes in the filter paper.
It condenses on the cooler walls of the funnel.
